The wood is left natural, the carving is exceptionally good quality for Chinese woodwork. No traces of pigments, only the edges are lacquered in red as can be seen in a photo. A Mokugyo is a wooden percussion instruments that is used by monks at Buddhist Temples (in Japan, China and Korea) during Buddhist ceremonies that involve the recitation of sutras or mantras to maintain rhythm during chanting. It is made from mostly KUSU (Camphor) wood. For large temple Mokugyos such as this one, the wood must be at least 100-years old...
