Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Rider

This unusual model of a horse & rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a creamy-white pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments. Note the detail of the overweight rider's clothing and hairstyle, who seems to be slumped in the horse's saddle !

Height 27.5cm. Repairs should, of course, realistically be expected for such pottery figures...

Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Black Pottery Horse

This small and attractive pottery model of a horse was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a black pottery with a smooth burnished surface. Note the detail to its mane. Pottery horses from the Yuan dynasty are much rarer than those from other periods.

A large, Museum Quality tomb pottery figure of a female attendant. Se carries a dish in front of her chest.

The figure dates to Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 AD.

The figure is placed on a large Lotus throne on top of high hexagonal plint, both are in fine deep cobolt blue and turquiose coloured glaze, as is the robe.

Her hair is styled very artfully and her head has finely hand painted facial details...

A set of archaic stone carvings were rarely found in pairs.
Obviously excavated from an ancient noble people's tomb, the pairs was used as protection guardians...

Han Dynasty terra-cotta standing soldier. Remnants of the original pigment can been seen over entire forges body. Overall in great original conditions with old repairs customary for such a piece.
The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BC were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China...

Terracotta soldier, nude standing upright without arms, with insertion holes at sides. Red pigment on back of head and lower leg, black pigment at back of head. Remnants of dirt lightly attached overall.

Chinese tomb pottery of standing guardian. Wonderfully modeled with flaming headdress, dragon form shoulders and breastplate armor, standing in relaxed pose atop vanquished foe. Expressive with bold expression, red pigment over white slip, black pigment on hair and face. Tang Dynasty (618-917 AD) Size: 22 1/4"High x 7 1/4" Width x 4 3/4" Depth. A nice green glazed authentic Han dog in a guarding pose bearing his teeth with a collar around his neck and body. Size: H. 19.5cm.(7.6 inches) L. 25.5cm (10 inches). Condition: Some loss of the green glazing. Two legs have been repaired with its original parts and tips of his ears have been repaired all professionally done

The small size of the figures (23-29 cm) makes this an interesting and rare group. The moulded figures still have much of their painting intact. The come in different sizes with different faces. Originally they carried wooden attributes or weapons. Condition: normal age wear, a few repairs (one arm and some toes, see pictures), overal in very good condition. A LIAO DYNASTY Terracotta Tsa-Tsa Votive Buddhist Plaque, China, AD 907-1125, with fine details. Nicely mounted on a wooden base. From a group of varied tablet sizes that were excavated, most likely from the foundations of an ancient Buddhist temple, placed there to ensure success and prosperity. Condition very good. Size 2.5" (6 cm.) No restorations. whatsoever.

Fine Chinese Tang Dynasty Horse & "Fat Man" Rider with Oxford TL Test

This fine pottery model of a horse and rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). Sitting on the horse is a male courtier, often referred to as a "fat man", the male equivalent of the "fat lady"; note the clothing and hairstyle. It is made from a relatively high-fired buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments.

Chinese rare Sancai glazed pottery figure of a standing horse. The saddle pad is glazed with four colors including a rare blue. The saddle itself is covered with a vermillion slip and naturalistically modeled with sweeping folds of fabric. Most exquisite is the graceful arching of the horses neck, the slight turn of the perfectly proportioned head, and one whimsically turned back ear. With TL test papers.

A rare and complete group of an ox and carriage in grey pottery with remains of polychrome. China, Tang Dynasty (618-907). The result of the thermoluminescence test by Kotalla is consistent with the dating of this lot. The report is included in the sale. Dimensions: the carriage H. 32 cm, L. 23 cm, the ox H. 18 cm, L. 23 cm. Condition: very good, no visible repairs, although repairs on early pottery are quite common and accepted.
