Chinese Tang Dynasty White Pottery Horse & Rider

This unusual model of a horse & rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a creamy-white pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments. Note the detail of the overweight rider's clothing and hairstyle.

Height 33.5cm (13 inches)...

A pottery whistle in the form of an unusual face with its lips puckered as if whistling. The top of the whistle has green and brown glazes (sansai glaze) - the bottom is unglazed. The glaze has a very fine crackle. Under magnification, tiny pits can be seen on the fine crackle, which is consistent with the appearance of glazes for pieces of this period.

Period: Tang (618 - 907 AD)

Ancient Chinese tomb pottery figure of a horse and rider. Made of gray clay and painted with polychrome slip pigment. The figure is clothed in flowing robes and a hat that covers his ears. Facial details on both the figure and the horse are wonderfully well preserved.

Chinese tomb pottery of standing guardian. Wonderfully modeled with flaming headdress, dragon form shoulders and breastplate armor, standing in relaxed pose atop vanquished foe. Expressive with bold expression, red pigment over white slip, black pigment on hair and face. Tang Dynasty (618-917 AD) Size: 22 1/4"High x 7 1/4" Width x 4 3/4" Depth. Terracotta horse from the Wei period. The clay is gray. It is of very good quality. There are traces of red polychromy and there is still gilding on the rump. This gilding is composed of thick gold leaves that we call in French goldsmith's trade a "feuillard" it's thicker than the classic leaf to gild the furniture. In the past, I read somewhere that gilding was only applied on Wei or Tang terracotta on princely tombs. (To be verified)...

Chinese Western Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Attendant Figure

This pottery model of a male attendant, or servant, was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). The figure stands with hands clasped together under a wide-sleeved robe. Note the presence of purpose-made holes above and below where the hands would be where a flag or banner (?) would originally have been placed diagonally, and presumably made of wood so long since rotted away and lost...

Chinese Western Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Groom Figure

This interesting pottery model of a groom was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a fairly high-fired grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in white, red, pink and black pigments. The figure wears a long garment and a head covering. He stands with his left hand outstretched as if holding the reigns of a horse (see our last image for an illustration of this)...

This fine pottery head was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of white pigment on top of which have been painted pink, red and black pigments to pick out the facial details.

Chinese Western Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse with Oxford TL Test

This fine and attractive pottery model of a horse was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It is made from a grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in a base coat of creamy-white pigment with details picked out in red pigment. The horse stands upright with its head turned to its right.

Special offer: 4 Tang Dynasty terra cotta statues, all have had repair i.e. heads glued back on- (two are not the original heads). The amber glazed figure has the original sancai glaze though not very shiny. Dimensions note in enlargement text.

A rare tomb gift from the Song Dynasty, made of red pottery, covered with green, brown and yellow glaze. The crawling position probably shows that this lady is worshipping the deceased person. Length 17 cm, height 12 cm. Condition: the hands restored, glaze loss. Please refer to the pictures.

Condition: very good, no traces of repair, although repairs are very common and accepted on archaeological pieces. There is paint loss and there is soil stuck to the figure. On the inside there are the remains of plant roots. A TL-test from Laboratory Kotalla confirms the authenticity of this piece. We bought three fat ladies that came from the same tomb. Please ...
