Japanese Antique Butsudan Household Shrine
Beautiful antique Japanese 2 section butsudan (buddhist shrine for personal use in home), lovely lacquer throughout, dark brown and gold lacquer on front with copper hardware, 2 sets of doors: outer doors decorated on inside with scenes of monks and villagers in raised gold lacquer (maki-e) on black lacquer ground with details in color and gold flecks (nishiji), set of interior doors with original silk mesh and inset with scenes of monks sitting under pine trees carved in wood with natural finish, interior of butsudan decorated with a profusion of gold lacquer and intricately carved to resemble a miniature temple with apsaras (musical angels) floating in rolling clouds, 2 small drawers and compartment with sliding panels all decorated with multicolored lacquer scenes of birds and peonies, at the top is a natural finished wood carving of birds in blossoming plum branches, bottom section serves as stand as well as storage and has a pull out shelf for offerings, 2 small drawers and sliders all decorated with scenes of birds, flowers and fans in gold lacquer with gold flecks on a black lacquer ground, Meiji Period. Size: 61 3/4" high (total) x 50" wide (open) x 24" deep. (27 1/2" wide when closed).
