| This is a hand woven silk rank badge, made in the 19th in China. It’s made from the ancient technique of silk tapestry weaving. The central design is a bird facing the sun, standing with one foot on a rock, with white clouds or waves with objects. The bird depicts a civil rank for a gentleman to be worn front and back of his robe. I am not sure if this bird is a Peacock , or a Mandarin Duck, I think it’s a Peacock which is a 3 rank, the Duck is 7th rank. It has hand painted definition through out accentuating the Buddhist symbols. The brown silk background and border is woven with silver threads, Bats grace the edges. It is in good condition, loose around the border and edges. It measures 11 x 12 inches. It has been suggested this is a Mandarin Duck from one of our viewers, thank you for the information. | |||||||||||||
