Aventurine and Silver Necklace, Ceylon

Expertly fashioned silverwork and nine disks of gorgeous green aventurine make this 19th century necklace from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) a stunning piece. Each disk is enclosed in a worked silver bezel and hangs from a small silver hinge attached to a 12-sided silver bead. Strung on a fine braided rope, the beads are separated with small silver circles. On each side, the green disks and beads are bracketed with a slender, curved slider. The necklace was made in the old Ceylonese hill town of Kandy, and is in keeping with the style of old silver jewelry from there. The luminous aventurine, most likely brought from India, is perfectly showcased in the heavy silver design. The necklace is in excellent condition. Including the clasp, it measures 20 inches (51 cm) long. The aventurine disks, hinges and beads drop down from the chain about 2 inches (5 cm).
