| Among the most appealing pieces of furniture to come out of provincial China are deep red cabinets that were made in a variety of sizes and handpainted with scenes or symbolic designs. Many of them originated in Shanxi Province in Western China where this small cabinet was made. Now very difficult to find, the original pieces have doors painted with black designs, often with a touch of gilt, that have faded and mellowed over time. This early 19th century piece is painted with mountain scenes and is original except for replacement hardware and touchup work on the sides and back. It is in very good condition.
