| Nearly four feet in height, this 19th century Burmese Mandalay Buddha holds both hands in the varada gesture, which signifies fulfillment of all wishes, boon granting and charity. The Buddha holds a small fruit offering in the right hand and stands on a lotus throne. The figure is made of carved wood that was lacquered and then gilded. Dark red lacquer can be seen in areas where the gilding has worn off. Because Buddha images such as this were placed above eye-level on an altar or in front of a pillar and viewed from the front, the backs of the figures were not gilded and had very little carving or modelling. The face of this Buddha is classic Mandalay style--an attractive, youthful oval with natural eyebrows, a slightly smiling mouth and a peaceful expression. The robe falls from the shoulders and is highlighted with bits of red and green mica. A wide fillet decorated with mica separates the face from the hair and unisha (protuberance on top of the head to symbolize wisdom), which are covered with slightly raised curls. As typical for this type of Mandalay Buddha, no finial tops the unisha. The Buddha is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 45" (114 cm), width 17" (43 cm), depth 7" (8 cm). | |||||||||||||
