| A fantastic Hand woven Kimono Obi with a non repeating pattern, made in Japan and enclosed in an old kiri-wood box. It is the most amazing work of woven textile we have ever owned, and would certainly have been tens of thousands of dollars new. Not once does the pattern repeat itself. From one end a courtesan seen from behind looks out from her palace shaded with cherry blossoms to a boat in the bay. Above her another dainty figure stairs towards the iris growing along the river bank, her long hair mixing with the pastel colors of her robes. Autumn grasses and maple leaves and the silent plums of winter as we pass through the seasons, water rushing by like time, never stopping. Once again the warm weather flora unfolds like a screen, we see our heroine peering out from behind a curtain, an oxcart nearby and the eaves of her palace shaded with wisteria draped pines. Autumn comes near in a field of wild flowers scattered with musical instruments. The color scheme hardens to glistening golds and muted pinks, whites and lavenders before splitting, tempestuous skies filled with cranes and phoenix, musical instruments float through the dark heavens, and a bundle of ribbons blown askew over the torpid sky. After a pine forest of gilded boughs a boatman plies the seas, hemmed in by iris, lilies and chrysanthemum. A spectacular work of art. Backed with triangular patterns of fortuitous items woven with gilded thread. The obi is 4.6 meters (more than 15 feet) long and in excellent condition. It was likely only ever used once, a treasure of this magnitude not to be often displayed. | |||||||||||||||
