Antique Japanese Buddhist Altar Table

An unusually large Buddhist prayer table gilded in genuine gold with a multilevel base carved with panoramic scenes enclosed in a period wooden box. The table rises from a rectangular base on curving legs to a diaper of pierced scrollwork. From there it reaches a plateau upon which rests the black lacquered table top lacquered with vine-work and featuring ornate scrolling ends. But the most unusual feature of this altar is the multilevel scene of wandering priests in a landscape of blossoming trees below the table top. Please view the photos for details; they are large files so please allow time for the download. The table is 31 x 6 x 10-1/2 inches tall (79 x 15 x 27 cm) and is in fine condition, dating from the later Meiji. There is one crack in the fillagree on front, see last photo.
