| A kanabun bright blue insect climbs slowly up a broad leafed flower on this early 20th century silk scroll by master painter Nishiyama Suisho (1879-1958). It is bordered in pale blue cloth patterned with swirling ripples, the ichimonji featuring a pattern of water-skippers, a great summer reference, and features solid ivory rollers. The scroll measures 22 x 54-1/2 inches (56 x 137.5 cm) and is in fine condition but for some faint age spotting, enclosed in a period wooden box. Nishiyama Suisho was born in Kyoto prefecture in 1879, named Uzaburo. He apprenticed under the great Takeuchi Seiho and his fame was sealed when he was prized at the first Bunten National Exhibition in 1908 (and many times thereafter). In 1920 he was named a professor at the Kyoto Municipal School of painting, where he later served as Headmaster. In 1944 he was named a member of the Imperial Art Academy (Teishitsu Gigei-In) and received the Japan Cultural Award in 1957, one year before his death. He was mentor to a multitude of 20th century artists including Domoto Insho and Uemura Shoko. Paintings by the artist are held in both the Tokyo and Kyoto National Museums of Modern Art, Nagoya, Kyoto and Fukuoka Municipal Museums as well as many others. This painting likely dates from earlier in the artists career, 1900-1920. | |||||||||||
