19th c. Antique Japanese Bamboo Vase w/ Gold Maki-e

A dragon-fish splashes in a tempest of roaring waves on this ancient bamboo vase signed on the back by both the lacquer artist and cutter of the bamboo. The dark, soft glow to the raw wood is supplanted by the black, red, gold and silver design with applied gold foil. The rims and interior are blackened with lacquer and spotted with gold water droplets. The vase is 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) tall, 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) diameter and comes enclosed in an age darkened wooden box titled 100th cut vase. It is in fine condition.
