| A partially restored mid Edo period Go-Mai-Do Gusoku of riveted iron bands bordered with leather on top. A very impressive looking suit, it features a six plate suji kabuto with matching leather on the fukigaeshi underlying a lightning bolt crest. The Shikoro, laced with regal red, is also bound to the helmet bowl with lightning bolt shaped pins and the crest is duplicated on the kanamono on back of the helmet and retains the original liner. The mask is a Resei me-no-shita-Ho lined with gold and featuring red teeth and a thin moustache. The Sode are also gold lined and black lacquered, tapering out slightly in a stylish manner. The Do is a Hoshi-toji Okegawa Go-mai-Do (five piece chest plate of straight iron bands bound with rivets). From the bottom hang eight rows of Gessan in black lacquer with gold lining, and the Do retains the original leather liner. Although now lacquered black, it appears to me this was originally a russet iron finish armor which was lacquered when restored. The helmet, mask and chest plates were all likely raw metal until being restored in 20th century, while the accessories, (Shikoro, Sode and Gessan) are all original lacquer over a thorough smooth base coat. The sangu (Kote, Haidate and Suneate) are of heavy design and in fine condition. It comes in an unadorned red lacquered barrel-flared armor box (usually reserved for upper class armor) typical of time and style. The cloth on the heavy Kote and Haidate matches, the only flaw being the cloth on the Suneate shin guards. However the style of plating on them is consistent with the suit and matches well. One of the pins holding the Shikoro is missing and there is one bubble in the lacquer on the bottom tier of the left Sode (visible in the close-up photo). The nose piece may not original to the suit, but does seem to match without standing out. | |||||||||||||||
