Set four Tokonoma Alcove Doors, Maple on Gold, Beinen

Vibrant red and yellow leaves adorn the branches of a maple harboring a fugitive woodpecker on this set of four gold Tokonoma alcove doors signed Beinen. Each door is bordered in a fine black lacquered frame and has ornate black metal handles. Oya Beinen, 1879-1966. Born in Aichi, he moved to Kyoto and studied under the 19th century master Morikawa Sobun, and then Kubota Beisen, from whom he recieved his name. They are made to fit an alcove opening 11 inches by 84-1/2 inches (28 x 214.5 cm) and could of course be re-used as doors, wall mounted as is and-or hinged as a low screen. Each door is 11-1/4 by 21-1/2 inches (28.5 x 54.5 cm) and in excellent condition, dated 1960. They are made up of a wooden lattice-like framework over which layers of paper have been added for strength. The paintings were then applied over top and the lacquered wooden borders and handles added last. Each is a little less than one inch (2 cm) thick.
