Stunning Japanese Tenmoku Vase by Fukumori Morihiko

An opulent gourd shaped vase by Mie artist Fukumori Morihiko enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. The mercuric liquid surface of the vase is as stunning as it is captivating. The deep silvered spots are so tight there is almost no room for the dark mirror surface to reveal itself. The combination of colors makes the vase seem blue tinged, when on close inspection we find the base color to be black onyx. A hint of red about the rim sets it apart. The artists signature is carved inside the foot-ring of the base. Actually a Tokkuri sake flask, it is quite common to use these pieces as ichirin-sashi flower vases. The piece is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall. Morihiko was born in 1937, and raised in the ceramic arts under the tutelage of his esteemed father Fukumori Shuji. He has been exhibited at the Japan Traditional Crafts Fair, and the Japanese Ceramics Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, Chunichi International Ceramic Exhibition, and was prized at the Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition. He has been mentor to a growing list of popular modern ceramic artists.
