Inro Suite: Cherry Bark with ivory Netsuke & Two Ojime
An 18th or early 19th century finely detailed three-case inro, of cherry wood bark and brown lacquer, with intricate fine raden inlay. Both sides feature a stylized dragon with outstretched claws amidst clouds, the detail enhanced by the cut-a-way of multiple layers of lacquer and bark and further accented with reddish and green hued mother-of-pearl. The sides are flanked with tubular type himotoshi decorated with the same softly glowing, multi-colored mother-of-pearl inlaid in a very narrow rectangular pattern. The ends are decorated in a basket-weave pattern utilizing three colors. Minor losses to the raden inlay as shown. Several photos provided here were taken under the bright light of an optical scanner to reveal the well-patinated detail. The inro suite includes two interesting ojime: one tubular with a swirling, diagonal black on silver striped decoration; the other a grooved, red lacquer bead, together with a 19th century, large ivory face netsuke of a bearded man. Length of inro approximately approx. 9.2cm (3-5/8”). The netsuke measures 4.5cm (1-3/4”). Please note: owing to CITES restrictions pertaining to ivory import and export, this item will not be sold en suite outside the U.S.A. The inro, together with the ojime, can be sold separately from the netsuke which can only be sold to customers in the U.S.A.
