19th/Early 20th Century. This is a charming antique Chinese carved wooden toy depicting a bearded Mongolian or a mythical general or warrior on horseback. The carving is of soft wood to which a layer of gesso or sizing has been applied and then painted in a manner similar to that used on antique Chinese wooden temple figures (see for instance a Daoist wooden temple figure, Trocadero Item 594207). There are significant losses to this item, in particular, of the rear legs of the horse and the sword the warrior once held in his right hand. Chips, losses and overall wear from frequent use but exuding a great deal of charm. The toy has been mounted on a stand and is easily detachable. $45.00.
