| Large Japanese bronze long-handled “kagami” (mirror) decorated with a traditional "shochikubai" design featuring the "three friends" (pine, prunus, and bamboo) together with cranes and a turtle. There is an inscription along the left side (see enlargement 4). The reverse side has a reflective surface. The mirror rests in the original black lacquered storage box. Long-handled kagami were often given as wedding gifts. 9 1/2" diameter x 13 3/4” long. Estimated to date from the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century). The mirror is in very good overall condition with a nice aged patina. The lacquer box has separations and wear. It is included at no extra cost. This piece is from an old Tucson, Arizona estate. It was purchased sometime between the 1950's and 1970's. | |||||||||||
