| Chinese scholar's wood brush pot, or "bitong," carved in the form of a knotty tree trunk. The dense, hard wood is polished to a smooth, high sheen. The recessed base is not carved from a separate piece. Stands 4 3/8" high. Estimated to date from the late Qing dynasty (19th century). Photographs were taken with a flash to accentuate the wood grain and to better reveal the fine hairline cracks evident in several areas. The actual brushpot is slightly darker and the hairline cracks are not as obvious as the images suggest. This piece is from the private collection of American expatriates who lived in Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s. | |||||||||
