17.5" Chinese Ca. 1820 Canton Export Blue White Platter

Large 17 1/2" long Chinese Qing dynasty export porcelain Canton octagonal platter decorated in underglaze blue with the traditional exotic houses, mountains, ships, and a bridge set against a white porcelain ground. The central panel is surrounded by a "rain and cloud" border. The use of this earlier pattern border and the thick "orange peel" glaze indicate a date circa 1820. This style of platter is illustrated on page 179 (plate 483) of Nancy Schiffer's book "Chinese Export Porcelain.” 17 ½” L x 14 ¼" W. Circa 1820-1830. Very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. There are old firing imperfections, some burst bubbles or tiny old fleabites to the rim, and a few fine scratches in the glaze from use. From the private collection of a former American expatriate to Guangzhou (Canton) in 1983-1984.
