An octagonal plate decorated in sepia and gilt depicting a rustic English cottage and garden, all within a scrolling vine border. The plate appears to be from a unique service commissioned by the Sclater family around 1785, 12 lots of which were sold at Christie’s London, 8th June 2004. Those pieces from the service chosen for illustration in the catalogue all show a family crest above each roundel, for some reason, perhaps an oversight, this example is without a crest.

The service is unique, Christie’s report, and comparisons have been made between this service and the ‘Frog’ service, commissioned by Catherine the Great from Josiah Wedgwood in 1773~74.

9.5/8 inches (24.4cm) diameter. The plate has a short hairline from the edge to the foot-rim, hardly visible from the front, more so on the back. This has been stabilised. The edge has some chips visible from the front and several shallow flakes on the back, shown in the photographs. Wear to the enamels from use. Please study the photographs.
