A PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT VASES DECORATED ‘EN GRISAILLE’, QIANLONG, 18TH CENTURY.
The meiping form porcelain vases gently lobed with high shoulders and an ovoid cross-section. They are decorated in black enamel and gold, a palette better known by the French term, ‘en grisaille’. The decoration depicts items close to the heart of the Chinese scholar; each has a ku vase used as a receptacle for ruyi sceptres and a jade musical stone from antiquity. Around the vase is to be found other vases, a water coupe with ladle and a paperweight, both items from the scholar’s table. The vases date from the mid-eighteenth century. Unlike Chinese export tea wares; ‘en grisaille’ vases are rare and more so when encountered as a pair in fine condition. Approximately 6.1/2 inches (16.5 cm) high. The porcelain is in good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. The gilding is worn.
