A SILVER MOUNTED YIXING EXPORT TEAPOT, EARLY 18TH CENTURY.
The squat teapot is of small size and is made with fine textured Yixing clay. The decoration of flowers issuing from eccentric rocks is separately moulded and then applied, a technique known as ‘sprigging’, the appliqués known as ‘sprigs’. At sometime the teapot has lost its original handle and a fine carved walnut handle has been attached with the use of good quality silver mounts. This work is from the 18th century and is of European origin. The lid features a water buffalo, unusual but not unknown. Approximately 5.7/8 inches (19.7 cm) from tip of spout to handle. The teapot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restored parts. There is however an area of sprigged flowers missing on one side, noted in the photographs. Please study the photographs. Please note that I have posted a few extra photographs on another listing.
