Unusual Figural Chinese Bronze Censer, Late Ming.
AN ATTRACTIVE LATE MING BRONZE CENSER, 17TH CENTURY.

The censer is made in two parts, a Lohan, dressed in a rustic grass rain cape, sits in sublime meditation upon a water buffalo. The buffalo has a very expressive head with open mouth and raised tongue. I forgot whilst photographing that he also has the Sanskrit ‘Om’ character on his forehead within a radiating sun. I say ‘him’ for the buffalo as the sculptor has thoughtfully added the correct details where it matters, if you are a buffalo that is. The Lohan has a tiny pierced aperture on the front and a larger leaf-shaped aperture on the back to allow the incense smoke to escape. The bronze has a very high copper content as usual with late Ming bronzes and the patina looks entirely original. For once the figure sits securely on the buffalo, collectors of this genre will know well just how unstable some of these censers can be.

7.3/8 inches (18.7cm) high, 7.3/4 inches (19.7 cm) long.. Fine original condition. The rear legs are bent slightly forward. This is not a result of an accident but reflects the many hundreds of years of careful use, the high copper content gives a more malleable metal and the very act of placing the censer down gives a forward impetus to the already forward facing rear legs.
