A STONEWARE VASE BY UNO NINMATSU, 1864~1937.
A stoutly potted stoneware vase decorated with a lustrous deep red glaze copper-rich glaze; where tickly applied the glaze has formed rich turquoise runs that feature an attractive crackle. The vase is unsigned but is accompanied by its original tomobako, a box inscribed and sealed “ko sai yu kaki”, meaning flower vase, and the artist’s signature “sei un zan ninmatsu”. The vase dates from the Taisho ~ Showa periods, 1912~1930 but it is possible that the box is later and is inscribed in the studio by one of Ninmatsu’s sons. 6.5/16 inches (16 cm) high. The vase is perfect; the box has signs of age and some old insect holes. Uno Ninmatsu became one of the leading Kyoto potters in the late Meiji period; he had been a pupil of Seifu Yohei III then became an independent potter in 1885. He won a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition in 1901 and a gold medal at the St Louis Exposition in 1905. He is well known for his copper-red glaze. Isamu Noguchi was at one time an apprentice of Uno Ninmatsu.
