A PAIR OF CHINESE BOXWOOD CARVINGS, 19TH CENTURY.
Each figure depicts an old man displaying an opened scroll, he carries a long staff and is accompanied by a deer. It is possible that he depicts the star god of longevity; Shoulao and the original purchaser chose to have two, left and right facing for double long life or perhaps just to grace a mantelpiece. The wood is dense and hard and so quite heavy. The eyes are formed from black and white glass, just black for the deer. The sculptures have a fine old patina and will respond to the application of some beeswax polish. Approximately 14.1/4 inches (36.2 cm) high. In fine and original condition except that the tip of one staff has been off and glued back, noted in the photographs.
