The form of the caddy is taken from an English silver example of the Regency period. The base is hall marked with the maker’s mark MH 90 and two further marks in Chinese characters. 90 of course states the quality of the silver and MH may be the maker, listed by initial only and working in Canton in the early 19th century, in Alan James Marlowe’s ‘Chinese Export Silver’. This early date ties in nicely with the style of the caddy. Marlowe states that the maker MH is rare, this probably due to early 19th century silver being uncommon when compared to items from the late 19th century / early 20th century.

Just under 6 inches (14.8 cm) high. Weight 265 grams. Fine condition with only a few minor dents that could be taken out by a silversmith.
