Large Chinese Iron Seated Luohan, 16th ~ 17th Century.
A large Chinese cast iron figure of a seated Luohan, 16th ~ 17th century. The patina of the figure is untouched in as much as it has remains of old paint and the surface of the iron is flaking. The flaking is normal for cast iron and any loose surface can be simply removed and the iron oiled for that museum or gallery finish. A nice project for a serious collector. The figure has a long inscription cast into the Luohan’s back, the calligraphy is quite thin and at present would be virtually impossible to read. Some cleaning of the surface may reveal more. Inscriptions on these sculptures normally include a date, the name of the temple and sometimes the name of the donor of the figure.

Approximately 23 inches (58.4cm) high, 13.1/4 inches (33.6cm) wide, 14.1/2 inches (36.8cm) deep. The condition of the surface is as mentioned before. The old paint looks dry; perhaps water based: and it chips off quite easily. The bottom of the rear left foot has been broken off and has been repaired with a piece of angled iron. This will form the foundation of an application of epoxy putty to rebuild the foot to match the rest of the base.

The figure is very heavy of course and cannot be sent in the post. A UK buyer would be welcome to collect the sculpture from Somerset or arrange a carrier to collect. An overseas buyer should be able to arrange for a specialist antique shipper to collect, pack and ship the sculpture for them. With the potential shipping cost in mind I have priced the figure as cheap as I can make it.

I am based in the United Kingdom so charges made to credit cards are in GBP ( British Pounds ) and your credit card issuer converts the charge to your own currency, that is, the currency of your country. Payment may also be made by direct bank transfer in GBP, or in cash, GBP or US$. International Money Orders or Cashiers’ Checks in GBP are also accepted.
