| Large ivory carving of a Chinese Empress head wearing an elaborate filigree crown. The Empress is finely carved with delicate facial features, eyes, earrings on the side, detailed hair & draped material. Inside the crown on top of the head is a separate carving of a small ivory seated “Future Buddha” with a flaming maitreya holding a whisk in one hand. The small Buddha image is attached to a removable carved ink-stained etched wood dome that fits snugly within the crown and represents the top of the Empress’ head. Marks: Base is signed with 4 Chinese characters, and has etched flowers. Size/Weight: Empress is 7” high by 4-1/2” wide by 3-3/4” deep; the small Buddha is 2” high by 1-3/4” wide by 1” deep on a Dome that is 2-1/4” high by 4” wide by 3-5/8” deep; overall weight is 1 lb 4 oz. Condition: Excellent, with the exception of two small hairlines in the crown, and a small ivory oval piece was inserted in the back (original condition). Date: Circa late 19th century.
