| Museum Quality Very Rare and Large late 19th to early 20th Century Three Level Korean Buddhist Temple Chest constructed of exotic zelkova and paulownia wood in Extraordinary Condition. We have attached here a scan of the page from the Portland Museum Korean Collection Catalog that has a photo and description of the chest they have that is the twin of this chest. These chests were used in the kitchens of Buddhist Temples. There only three in existence in America that anyone knows of: this one, the one in the Portland Museum, and one in the Weisman Art Museum. They are now illegal to remove from Korea. The three that are here came when it was legal to bring these over. This is the largest chest we've ever had, at 70h x 43w x 22d inches, 177h x 110w x 55d cm. The condition is so amazing, that when we saw photos of it, we thought it was new. A personal inspection revealed its authenticity, with its hand-planing, 19th Century joinery, old wooden nails for the drawers, old wood with evidence of extensive wear to the interiors, etc. Temple chests were cleaned daily, and this one has developed a beautiful patina from the daily buffing. This is truly a museum quality piece that would sell for much more in a better economy, and will undoubtedly be worth much more when the economy improves. | ||
