Yamanashi Prefecture-based potter Miura Shurei (1942 -) says, "both clay and glaze are like a drop of precious blood, of life- I thank it for letting me use them." All of Miura's raw materials are taken from the areas surrounding Mt.Fuji. After studying Arita and Kiyomizu porcelain wares, he made his kiln in Yamanashi in 1971; Mt.Fuji is located in Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. Keen to tradition while challenging deep, complex glazes such as that in this very engaging tsubo-jar, Miura has exhibited at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, Kuroda Toen Ginza, Yokohama Takashimaya, and has works at the Smithsonian Museum, Victoria Museum, Sackler Museum, and has presented works to the Emperor of Japan- he has also received many awards, such as at the International Bienale and the International Ceramic Art Exhibition. Miura's glazing is exquisite; this iridescent piece takes on a different temperament depending on the lighting. All in all the overlapping and blending of blues and purples seen here is quite mesmerizing and hypnotic. The full ripe form is topped off by the three fold lip. A museum piece in perfect condition, 27.5cm.tallx26.2cm, signed on base, signed box; very enigmatic indeed.
(Please note there is an issue with updates to our site in terms of showing online; we are offering new works as always--listing new works around Japan time 4pm, yet they are taking more time to show, please know this will be resolved ASAP)
