Black Raku Chawan by Egawa Setsusai

Very much in a Koetsu rounded form, this is a fine Kuro-Raku (Black Raku) chawan by Egawa Setsusai(1902-1979). More about Egawa with a photo of the potter in other Egawa listings. He was a Tea potter and this chawan was exhibited at a Mitsukoshi exhibit about thirty years ago; the number 31 is still on the base, the white square seen in the photos. It's never been used. The flash brought out the iron in the glaze but in person it is very black. Small pinholes are also highlighted but are not so visible in person except on one grainy side. It's a nice contrast to the smooth body. Black and white are the hardest colors to capture yet let me say this is a wonderful black Raku chawan that feels like magic in the hands; the first black Raku I've ever offered. In perfect condition with a signed box, 8.0cm.tall and 11.8cm.wide, stamped setsu on base.
