| A hardwood (appears to be one of the darker varieties of the rosewood family) sculpture of Damo, also known as Bodhidarma, the founder of Chinese Chan Buddhism and Japanese Zen Buddhism. He is depicted crossing water with his right shoe off, which he is holding in his left hand. It was said that Damo was born under the Bodhi Tree where Buddha attained enlightenment. Damo was also the founder of Kung Fu (Shaolin). This carving is quite beautiful, very smooth, with excellent detailing. The photos do not do it justice. You will not be disappointed. A large piece, he measures 17” (43.2 cm) high x 9” (22.9 cm) along the base. Dating early 20th C around 1910. | ||||||||||||||
