Japanese Silver Kodansu Formed As A Jewelry Box

An openwork silver kodansu formed as a jewelry box with double doors, elaborate hinges and clasp, foliate top-handle and three drawers with green velvet-lined interiors. On the exterior, the majestic ho-o bird spreads its wings in mid-flight against trellises of lush pawlonia leaves and foliage. Scenes on all four sides of the silver chest are executed with finely incised and partly -hammered detailing.(This auspicious scene is associated with the Chinese legend, teaching that the ho-o bird (phoenix) only perches on pawlonia branches when it comes to earth.) Within, the inner doors and drawers are beautifully black lacquered, the metal mounts, foliate-shaped. (See:"The Elements of Japanese Design-A Handbook of Family Crests, Heraldry & Symbolism", John W. Dower, 1971, page 68.) This silver kodansu is in excellent condition, with no damage & no restoration. Height: 4", width: 4.5", diameter: 3.5" Late Meiji Period, Japan
