A Chinese Hetaomu 'Bi Xie' Plaque, 19th Century

A very rare double side carved walnut wood Bi Xie plaque. One side is Ba Gua and the other side is incantation. ‘Ba Gua’ (literally eight trigram). It is one of the ancient Chinese auguries. These trigrams symbols are used to represent all natural phenomena as described in the ancient Chinese text of divination, Yi Jing (the Book of Changes). Bi Xie in Chinese means to ward off evils. From Shangxi Province, North China.
