Rare Khmer 11th Century Zoomorphic Stoneware Jar - Owl
This interesting stoneware jar was made during the late 11th century. The general type of jar is typical of Khmer ceramics of this period although this is a particularly rare example having zoomorphic applied features to give it the form of an owl. In addition, the surface is decorated with incised converging diagonal lines to give the appearance of feathered wings. The golden-brown glaze is finely-crackled. As can be seen, there are two kiln scars, one below the owl's beak and one to the lower rear. The glaze has flaked a little in places and there is an area of repair to the mouth and ridged body just below the rim (see second to last picture where the rim is darker. Diameter 10 cm, Height 9 cm Warning: many reproductions of this type of vessel are made for the tourist industry.
