This superb large pottery jar was made over 3,000 years ago by peoples of the Siwa Culture (c. 1350 BC). It has a smooth burnished surface and has been fired to a particularly attractive deep orange colour, although the surface colour does vary quite a lot due to uneven conditions in the Neolithic kiln which only adds to its beauty. It has a particularly wide saddle-shaped mouth. This jar has been constructed using the coiling method and combed patterns made by the shaping tool cover the inner surface. There are several firing/stress fractures, most apparent by looking at the inner surface, however, these have been mostly filled and disguised on the outer surface. 

An exceptional example with a height of 40 cm (15.75 inches). There is what is clearly an ancient surface chip to one handle and, as mentioned above, cracks that have been filled. There is also some repair to part of the mouth. However, let us not forget that this superb jar is over 3,000 years old so some defect must be expected by any reasonable person. Quite simply, even with the repairs, this jar is outstanding !
