This large stoneware bowl was made during the 14th - 15th Century at one of the Sukhothai kilns. It is heavily-potted with underglaze iron decoration over a white slip, the glaze being crackled. In the centre are five "spur" marks in the glaze from where such bowls were stacked on top of each, separated by spacers, in the kiln. This bowl is delightfully warped, something we love to see ! Much of the surface has traces of "calcified" growths from its long burial, all of which are easily removed (although we like to see this as they are part of the bowl's history). There is some "fritting" to the glaze at the edge of the rim.

Diameter 25.5 cm (10 inches). No repair or restoration and a good ring when tapped; a lovely example in fine condition.
