A Rare Japanese Stoneware Lidded Jar. Kyoto Ware. Edo Period. 18th. Century Ht. 5 1/8 ins. (13 cms), Diam. 7 ins. (17.7 cms) This attractive jar is typical of the light and finely made Kyo-yaki stoneware made in Kyoto during the Edo Period. It is probably NOT a mizusashi (fresh water jar) for the tea ceremony which usually have lacquered wood lids and are broader and more stable in the base. We are not sure what its purpose was. The bracken shoot knopf on the lid and the cherry blossom on the body, executed in underglaze iron and thick white glaze, suggest the vessel was intended to be associated with spring. The vessel is sophisticated in design, with its lateral grooves on the shoulders intersected by vertical lines, a theme which is repeated on the lid. The unglazed foot ring is precisely cut, as is the lid, a very Kyoto feature. The jar is in good condition. There is an old gold lacquer repair on the lip, an old hair crack from the lip to the shoulder and a chip on the inside of the cover. *** TO ORDER THIS ITEM PLEASE EMAIL US QUOTING OUR STOCK NUMBER (see above) - WE SHALL THEN EMAIL YOU BACK WITH POSTAGE COSTS AND PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS *** *** FOR FULL DETAILS OF OUR GUARANTEE AND PAYMENT OPTIONS, PLEASE CLICK ON "Buying from us - All you need to know" ON OUR HOME PAGE *** |
