Fine Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Cocoon Jar
This superbly-shaped jar was made around 2,000 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). The shape, named after its similarity to the silk-worm cocoon, evolved during the late Warring States period and then generally died out by the middle of the Western Han. All vessels of this type are from tombs, indicating a ritual use as opposed to an everyday use. This is a particularly fine example with the surface elaborately decorated with a painted scrolling cloud pattern between three vertical bands with much of the original pigment still remaining. A good size with a length of 30 cm (12 inches) and a height of 27 cm (10.5 inches). Although very difficult to see, and we are sure not noticeable by most people, we believe a section of the rim has been broken out and re-stuck. Overall a superb example in fine condition. *** TO ORDER THIS ITEM PLEASE EMAIL US QUOTING OUR STOCK NUMBER (see above) - WE SHALL THEN EMAIL YOU BACK WITH POSTAGE COSTS AND PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS *** *** FOR FULL DETAILS OF OUR GUARANTEE AND PAYMENT OPTIONS, PLEASE CLICK ON "Buying from us - All you need to know" ON OUR HOME PAGE *** |
