This superb tall pottery vessel was made some 4,000 years ago by people of the Xiajiadian culture (c. 2300 - 1600 BC) from Inner Mongolia. This vessel is particularly characteristic of this Neolithic culture with its wide rim, partly hollow udder-shaped legs and carefully constructed body. In places on the finely burnished surface are chalky calcium-like deposits, a result of long burial. Inside are many remains of plant/root growth from burial.

This is a large example with a height of 23.5 cm (9.25 inches); the diameter of the mouth is 16 cm (6.5 inches). Unlike the vast majority of similar excavated examples that have been offered for sale in recent years, although the tip of one foot is slightly chipped, this example has no restoration or repair and is truely exceptional.
