Chinese Song Dynasty Lacquered Wood Spoon & Chopsticks
Very Rare Chinese Song Dynasty Lacquered Wood Spoon & Chopsticks

These extremely rare items were made approx. 800 - 1,000 years ago, both having been excavated from the same Song Dynasty tomb (AD 960 - 1279).

The spoon can only be described as exquisite. The inside of the bowl of the spoon is coated in red lacquer as is the other end. Close examination shows that the rest of the spoon is not in fact bare wood but coated in what appears to be ochre-coloured lacquer, indeed, this paler lacquer is actually on top of the red lacquer where the two colours meet. There is no restoration or repair and the state of preservation looks to be excellent. Length 25 cm (9.75 inches).

The pair of chopsticks is coated in a dark red lacquer although the end of one, where the lacquer has flaked slightly, reveals an under layer of a paler coloured lacquer. The lacquer has "bubbled" slightly but overall condition is superb. One chopstick is slightly longer than the other, the length of each being approx. 28.5 cm (11.25 inches).
