Details: An elegant and fluid example of a 7th century Javanese image of a Bodhisattva. This four armed Bodhisattva is standing in Samapada on what probably would have been a round double lotus base with his four hands radiating around him holding his now worn attributes. His sacred thread or Upavita is draped over his slender well proportioned torso along with the various jewelry and sashes denoting his status as a princely Bodhisattva. He wears a richly decorated headdress of the Jatamukuta type in which you can just make out the form of an identifying image, whether it is the Jina Amithabha identifying the image as Avalokiteshvara or a Stupa identifying the image as Maitreya is not clear. The Bodhisattva’s face is soft with serene features that wear once amazingly fine as are the many locks of hair trailing over his athletic shoulders and chest. This piece having only a knee length Indic Sampot, standing in Sampada and with the four attributes points to this piece probably being a local emulation of a Southern Indian image of the period. Although worn with the passage of time the quality of the piece is wonderful. His proportions are almost perfectly balanced with a fluidity and elegance that gives the viewer’s eye a real aesthetically pleasing treat. Age: 7th Century. Height: On base 18 cm, off base 15.5 cm.
