2nd-3rd Century Gandharan Green Schist Reliquary Casket

Details: A very cute and tactile example of a 2nd to 3rd century green schist reliquary casket from Gandhara. The spherical casket has two delicately incised concentric lines on both the top and bottom typical of Gandharan reliquaries and is topped by a pistil shaped knob. The casket contains three relics, a bronze coin and two glass items, one of which shows the ancient auspicious symbol of the swastika.

In W. Zalf’s B.M. catalogue on Gandharan art, he notes that concerning reliquaries the range of material considered suitable for deposition was considerable, but a relic chamber might typically contain a miniature stone or rock crystal stupa and possibly a metal casket which contained further relics including gold, bone fragments, semi-precious stones, pearls, beads, coins and smaller caskets of which this is one.

Age: 2nd-3rd Century A.D.

Height: 6.5 cm.

Remarks: Black wooden base included.
