Details: An elegant and sensuous 16th century example of a seated Green Tara from Nepal. The goddess of compassion is seated in lalitasana with her right foot gracefully resting on a lotus blossom emanating from her double tiered lotus throne. She is wearing a clinging diaphanous dhoti, revealing the ample proportions of her alluringly voluptuous body with its swelling planes and rounded curves which add to the image’s sense of movement and beauty. Tara’s hands are held delicately in varadha and vitarka mudras with two finely cast lotuses flowing gracefully up from her hands to curl gently around both of her shoulders. The goddess’s inset five leaf crown surrounds her hair arranged in a tiered conical topknot surmounted by a flaming cintamani with some flowing tresses of her hair escaping loosely down around her beautiful, smiling, understanding face onto her broad shoulders. Her crown, armlets, and necklaces are tastefully bejeweled with inset turquoise, red stones and glass. According to Buddhist tradition, Tara was born from the compassionate tears of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. It is said that he wept as he looked upon the suffering of the world, and his tears formed a lake from which a lotus emerged. When the lotus opened, the goddess Tara was revealed. Tara is the goddess of universal compassion and represents virtuous and enlightened action. She is also said to bring about longevity, protect earthly travel, and guard her followers on their spiritual journey to enlightenment. Age: 16th Century. Height: 18.5 cm (On base).
