A pair of Burmese Wooden Buddha’s Chief Disciples

The two chief disciples of the Buddha, Moggallana and Sariputta, sometime are depicted beside the Buddha.

Moggallana, who is known for his supernatural powers, always appears on the left side while Sariputta, who is famous for his profound wisdom, is always on the right side of the Buddha. Moggallana, seated with both hands in adoration posture. Sariputta, seated with his hands placed on his legs.

The figures of the chief disciples shown here, decorated with gold color painted on black lacquer, some part with traces of gold leaves, with robes inlaid with colorful glass pieces.

Age: Burmese, Mandalay period, 19th century.
Measurement:
The Left Disciple’s (Moggallana) Width (measured at the back) 21.8 C.M. / Height 20.3 C.M.
The Right Disciple’s (Sariputta) Width (measured at the back) 23.3 C.M. / Height 20.3 C.M.
Condition: Both with repaired back robe ends and some missing glass pieces (some expected degradation due to age). Please refer to the enlargement photos for more details.
