This engraved silver box with a thin wooden liner measures 4 by 6 inches by one inch in depth. It is covered overall with engraved and repeating swirl patterns overall. The top center has a flat circle with a gold or gilt star and crescent pattern inset. It appears to be a replacement for an earlier mounted circle of unknown motif. We guarantee that this is solid silver and not plated silver. There is a partially obscured mark on the bottom that reads PAK---SIL--. It weighs just under 300 grams with the thin wood liner. There appears to be one pencil point sized repair (in gold) on the top cover:it is virtually impossible to see, except upon magnification. The box is in very good to excellent condition overall. It dates to the early part of the 20th century. Note: although the star and crescent symbol is Turkish, the box may have been hand made by a silversmith in Pakistan. |
