Elaborate Chinese Hardwood Table Screen with Jade Bi

DESCRIPTION: An exquisite Chinese table screen, elaborately carved with a mounted jade bi on one side and an inscription on the reverse. Stands such as these were custom made to display specific precious jade artifacts, with this bi most likely dating from the Neolithic Period (5,000 to 2,000 BC). The inner frame’s surface is carved in relief on each side with a pair of convoluted dragons; another pair of carved and pierced dragons form the supports on either side of the stand. On the reverse is a Chinese inscription, most likely a poem or presentation statement.

The smooth-surfaced bi itself is of a semi-translucent nephrite with white, brown and beige inclusions, and can be removed from the frame by unlocking the wooden button which secures it. This impressive and handsome piece would have graced the scholar’s table and been displayed with esteem. From a Florida collection, this piece is in excellent condition with no discernable chips or flaws. DIMENSIONS: 9” high (23 cm) x 6 ˝” wide (16 cm).
