DESCRIPTION: An unusual celadon nephrite disc carved from a single stone, yet consisting of two separate interlocking discs, each independent of the other. Both sides are identically carved with the outer disc crafted of two interwoven bands in an “endless knot” design with eight perforations. This wraps around an inner ring of incised lines, also divided into eight sections by perpendicular bands.
The inner disc is beveled to fit into the outer disc’s “track” (no easy carving feat) and has a pierced swastika design, a Chinese symbol of longevity and good fortune. When this inner disc is held between the thumb and index finger, the outer disc can be easily twirled (rotated) around it. From a Florida collector who purchased it in Thailand in the mid 1960’s, this piece dates from the 19th C. or earlier (Qing Dynasty). In good condition with a few small chips to the outer rim. DIMENSIONS: 2 ¼” diameter (5.8 cm). |
