Chinese Ivory Toggle of Three-Legged Toad, 18th C.

DESCRIPTION: A Chinese carved ivory toggle in the form of Chan Chu, the magical three-legged money toad, with his hind leg curled like a tadpole, and circular “warts” lining his back. A toggle such as this would not only have been used as a counterweight for objects hanging from a man’s sash, but also acted as a good luck charm to bring wealth into his life. Strung with a grey agate bead, this toggle has a wonderful aged patina and was obviously handled fondly. The patina and wear would indicate an origin of early 18th C. Qing Dynasty, and could quite possibly be 17th C. DIMENSIONS: 1 7/8” long (4.8 cm).
